What is the TESLA Scientific Center?

The TESLA Accelerator Installation is the principal facility of the TESLA Scientific Center - a regional center for fundamental and applied research in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science, and for production of radioisotopes, medical diagnostics and therapy with radioisotopes, and proton therapy.

The TESLA Scientific Center is an association of institutions from Yugoslavia and the other countries in the southeastern region of Europe interested in the use and development of the TESLA Accelerator Installation. This Center was founded in July 1996. Its members are the following institutions:

  • Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
  • Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy, Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Horia Hulubei National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Bucharest, Romania
  • National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos, Athens, Greece
  • Lola Institute, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
  • Faculty of Physics, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
  • Faculty of Physical Chemistry, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
  • Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
  • Clinical Center of Serbia, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
  • Institute of Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, Belgrade, Yugoslavia

The developing of the TESLA Scientific Center should be going on with the help of the following institutions:

  • European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), from Geneva, Switzerland,
  • Joing Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), from Dubna, Russia, and
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, U.S.A.

The southeastern region
of Europe

The construction of the TESLA Accelerator Installation is controlled by the TESLA Advisory Committee, whose Chairman is G. Plass, from CERN. The preparations for use of this facility are controlled by the TESLA Program Committee, whose Chairman is Yu. Oganessian, from JINR.

In the southeastern region of Europe there is no facility similar to the TESLA Accelerator Installation, and thus, with its completion the conditions for research and applications for physicists, chemists, biologist, engineers, and physicians in this region will imporve substantially.

The TESLA Scientific Center also has the task to provide the additional education for talented young specialists in the southeastern region of Europe in a number of new and modern disciplines within the above mentioned scientific, technological, and medical fields.
