THE
THIRD INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ABOUT CATECHISM IN THE BALKANS
“CATECHISM IN CHURCH AND CHURCH IN CATECHISM”

Saint Nikola - Soko Monastery and Office for catechism in Loznica,
Diocese of Sabac - Valjevo
in the period between 12-17 of May

B.O.Y.A started with Catechism seminar programs in 2001. The aim
of B.O.Y.A is to help young orthodox catechism teachers in exchange
of experiences and improving their professional knowledge. The
first seminar was in Banja Luka in 2001, the second in Veliko
Trnovo, Bulgaria in 2002 and this year in Saint Nikola - Soko
Monastary near Ljubovija in the period between 12 - 17 of May,
with blessing of His Eminence Bishop of Sabac - Valjevo, Mr. Lavrentije.
This seminar was organised by the office for Catechism of Sabac
- Valjevo diocese in Loznica with coordinator father Radosav Markovic,
Foundation of Holy Monastery Chilandar wich represented by mr.
Stefan Srdjan Milenkovic (member of the Board of BOYA), and St.
Sava’s Youth Association of Archdiocese of Beograd - Karlovac.
There were 26 participants from all local churches in the Balkans
from these countries: Turkey ( Ecumenical Patriarcate ), Albania,
Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbian Republic and Serbia.
The title of the seminar was "Catechism in the Church and
the Churc in catechism". The first working day was dedicated
to theoretical examination of catechism, its position in church,
inner structure and status in different environments. Reports
were presented by Aleksandar Djakovac, theologist and catechism
teacher from Belgrade, father Charalambos Theodosis, superior
of temple of St. Nektarios in Athens and substitute of coordinator
in youth office in Holy Metropoly of Atica, father Dimitrios Maroulis,
biologist and assistant in the youthoffice in Archdioces of Athens
in Athen, father Zahary Dechev, assistant professor from Burgas,
father Arsenios Kardamakis, theologist and representative of Ecumenical
Patriarcate for youth work from Studgart and Marian Marikarou,
historian and theologist from Bucharest.
The second working day began with Holy Liturgy for celebration
of Saint Prophet Jeremija which was served at the monastery in
all Balcan’s languages for the first time. The participants
presented their practical work with children, new school books,
literature, didactic methods and other innovations. That was the
opportunity for comparison of school books, and practical notebooks,
didactic methods and the level of development of catechism in
the Balkan countries also the characteristics in the way of education
in different countries. Reports were presented by Branka Jevtic,
theologist and catechism teacher from Valjevo, Kristaq Bakallbashi,
theologist from Orthodox academy in Drach, Aleksandar Stojanovic
theologist and catechism teacher from Banja Luka, Stavroula Theodosis,
Maria and Vasiliki Kriara, students from Faculty of Pedagogue
in Athens and father Nenad Markovic, member of Committee for catechism
in Diocese of Sabac - Valjevo.
The last two days were organised a visits to spiritual and culture
inheritancas in Diocese of Sabac - Valjevo and presenting of fertile
work in the field of catechism.
The third day was organised a visit to Monastery Tronosa and ethno
- complex Trsic. Trsic become very considerable place for catechism
in Diocese of Sabac - Valjevo. Trsic is within competency of Culture
Center “ Vuk Karadzic “ which appropriated five buildings
( five small, village houses, in fact ) to office for Diocese
of Sabac - Valjevo. We have particularity that 50 000 school children
annually visit Trsic. After that the mayor of Loznica entertained
the participants and talked about the ways of cooperation between
city authority and office for Catechism.
Participants also had an opportunity to visit one class in high
school in Loznica. After that, we visit a gallery of famous Serbian
painter Mica Popovic and his wife Vera Bozickovic - Popovic and
Jadar museum. In the and of that day we had a cocktail in Center
for Catechism in Loznica which realized very considerable results
for very short time ( the respons of children in primary schools
is 98% ).
The forth day participants visited these Monasteris: Pustinja,
Celije, Lelic, Kaona where was the final session of the seminar
with blessing of Archimandrite Milutin the abbot of Monastery
Kaona and subititute of His Beatitude of Diocese of Sabac - Valjevo
Lavrentije.
Basic conclusion of participants was that seminar was completely
succeeded, that organization was great, and that we untilized
maximum during the four days of seminar. It has been declared
that these seminars are very necessary, expecialy for improving
knowledge and experience of young catechists.
As a result of these three seminars it will be published a collection
of texts which will have three parts: theoretical examination
of essence of catechism, informative oversee of situation in local
churches and practical prepositions, methods for education. The
Publisher is Foundation of Holy Monastery Chilandar from Belgrade.
The donor of seminar was office for Catechism Sabac -Valjevo from
Loznica with help and support of the Foundation of Holy Monastery
Chilandar.
