SO what the hell is all this about?

Well, it's about a demo party you don't want to miss.

MindEscapE and Black Plum invite you to

                           YALP98

being yet another one in the incredibly long, legendary, and traditiona=
l
   line of YALPs to come.

YALP? Huh? What?

The first YALP was the first big demo party in Yugoslavia, and it's sti=
ll
the biggest yet. There were some two parties before it, but those were=

small and in a way private; YALP was open for everyone, and after it
there were some two other open, big parties, but they didn't quite
      reach its popularity either.

Mind it that even though we called it Yet Another _Lame_ Party, it was
not lame. In fact, it was pretty lamer-free compared to the bulk of
the parties today - no kids playing Quake or anything. And it
will go the same for the second party. The name is a joke,
and if you don't get it, we won't miss you very much.

When..

  May 24 1998, noon:00 - sometime:58 CET.

  Well, it's a one-day party again. We simply couldn't get a convenient
place for people to sleep. The doors will open at noon, and all the
"official" stuff will end by midnight, when a concert will begin.

The deadline for modules and demos is 14:oo, and the deadline for
everything else is 16:oo. The votes will be counted and prizes
    given between 23:oo and midnight.

Where..

Earth, Europe, Yugoslavia, Belgrade, Zemun, Pinki hall, Dunav-Fest club=
=2E

Getting there..

.. is half the fun. We've prepared some instructions on finding the
partyplace, but they will probably bore you to death, so they're
at the very end of the invitation.

Entrance fee..

5 Yugoslav dinars, which is currently a bit less than one German mark.
We're not trying to make money off this party, but if the entrance
were free (like last time) we'd have a problem with distributing
votesheets (like last time) and some people could get their
hands on more than one (like last time). Anyway, all the
money goes to covering the party expenses, and then to
the prize fund. Girls have the option of entering
for free, but then they don't get votesheets.

Compos..

  PC demo
   Amiga demo
    C64 demo
     256 bytes megademo

  PC intro
   Amiga intro

  4ch music
   Multichannel music
    C64 music

  Amiga/PC pixel
   C64 pixel

  Wild compo

  Useless utility

  The fun compos

=2E. and rules..

Your productions better not damage our equipment, or we will damage you=
=2E

One entry per author/group per category.

If there are many entries, or yours is a very long one, we might put a
time limit on them. If you can put it all in 5 minutes or so, you'll
do a favor to us, yourself, and the audience.

If there are _really_ many entries, we'll weed out the worst ones to sa=
ve
everyone's time. Nobody wants to see 300 bad intros in one day. Anyway=
,
if there still aren't too many of them, but your entry is total and
obvious crap, we won't show it.

In the module compos there will positively be too many entries, so we
will definitely play just some 10 or so in each compo, 5 minutes
each. There's no rule your module can't be longer than that,
it just won't be played any longer at the party.

All demos/intros: Including animation is ok, but you're doing it at you=
r
own risk. We won't have many idiots for visitors, so the more
animation, the less votes. Animations belong to the Wild
     compo.

PC/Amiga executables: Do not write to the hard disk.

256 bytes megademo: This is mainly meant for PC megademos, but if you
bring your non-PC 256-byter, it can be shown no problem. However, if
it can't run on any of the compo machines (say, we had an Atari
256-byter last time) better contact us in advance, so we can
plan how to connect your machine (yes, you're supposed to
       bring it) to the beam.

Just to make ourselves clear, 256 bytes means 256 bytes ON DISK and we
don't care what your header sizes or anything are. They must be
startable normally, and don't cheat by putting extra code in
the filename or anything. For C64 megademos in particular,
this means one sector on a normal GCR formatted disk,
but the megademo may be started with a SYS instead
        of a RUN.

If enough people bring non-PC megademos (and don't count on that
happening), we'll make a separate category for them.

Speaking of that, if there are very few entries in some similar categor=
ies
   - particularly PC intro and Amiga intro - we could merge them together=
=2E

C64 pixel and music: Make them executable, period. Also, don't put any
scrollies or anything moving in the gfx - interlace doesn't count as
moving, of course. If your tune shows anything interesting while
playing, we'll just turn the screen off while we play it.

All modules will be played on the compo PC with the Cubic Player v2.0.

All graphics except C64 ones will be shown on the compo PC with SEA v1.=
2.

There's a reason pixel gfx are called pixel, so don't bring any
pixel-improved traces, scans or whatnot. Maximum 256 colors.

Raytrace compo is for pure raytraces, so skip the picture fx of the
Photoshop type. This category is also for other program-generated
gfx, like fractals or anything you come up with.

Photoshop compo is for (surprise, surprise) Photoshop gfx. It is ok if
your picture started as a scan, trace or anything else, but was then
heavily photoshopped; it is not ok if most of the work was done on
paper or in a 3D program, and the picture then just slightly
smoothed out in Photoshop. Obviously, your program of
choice doesn't have to be exactly Photoshop - you
can do it in any program of the sort.

Wild compo: Bring anything you care to. Contact us if you want to bring=

   your own hardware.

Useless utility: Generally, anything is ok, but it should be fun.

ThE fUn ComP0s: These are a surprise. Let's just say that one of them w=
ill
be for the strong of body, and the other for the strong of heart. You
don't really need to bring anything to take part in them, though a
wild pack of crazy cheerleaders would be very welcome.

  Bring all C64 contributions on 1541-readable 5.25" diskettes, non-C64 g=
fx
and mzx and PC-anything on PC 3.5" diskettes and Amiga-anything-but-
-gfx-and-music on Amiga 3.5" diskettes. Wild compo stuff can also
     be brought on CDs.

Instead of listing all the imaginable non-compo rules like "don't start=

fights", "don't break other people's equipment", "don't bring too big
speakers", let's just say that everyone has the same right to have
a good time as you, and that you'll get kicked out if you make
      other people's good time bad.

Size limits..

  PC/Amiga demo: 8 Mb
  C64 demo: 2 full disks
256 bytes megademo: 10 Tb, but only megademos of 256 bytes or=

                                less are acceptable.
  PC/Amiga intro: 64 kb
  4ch/Multichannel music: 1 Mb
  C64 music: 1 disk side
  Gfx: Whatever we can load
Wild compo/Useless utility: If it's more than 1Gb, contact us ahead
Fun compos: 4x4x4 meters, 700 kilograms per contestan=
t,
                                 including cybernetic enhancements

Compo machines..

  PC: Intel pentium 166 Mhz
16 Mb of Really Adequate Memory
GUS Max + SB AWE64 gold
                             Tseng ET6000 or better
                             MS DOS 6.22 clean / XMS / XMS+EMS

  Amiga: A1200/060/18M

C64: PAL VIC (obviously), new SID, 1541-II

Wild compo PC: Pentium II 233Mhz
                             64 Mb RAM
                             SB AWE64 gold
                             Diamond Fire card
                             MS DOS 6.22 / Windows 95 osr2

  Beam: max 800x600

  Sound: about 1500W Marshall

Voting..

When you get in, you get your votesheet. You can save yourself a lot of=

trouble just by bringing your own pen. When the last compo is over,
put your votesheet in the vote box. If you have to leave early,
you can put your incomplete votesheet there anytime after the
      first fun compo.

Prizes..

Ever noticed how often it happens that people don't really manage to gi=
ve
the exact prizes they promise? That's why we won't promise anything
exact. There will be prizes for the winners, oh yes sir, there
will be. Some cash from the entrance fee, some CDs and a few
pieces of hardware. Real hardware, not elbow cushions.
       Come, win, and see.

Contact..

You can mail some of the organizers at:

You can also join the YALP mailing list by sending a message with
"subscribe yalp" in its body to listserv@dv.co.yu, but you may
first be interested in knowing that the list is in Serbian
     language only.

But the war..

.. never even came near. If you got your news reports wrong, there's be=
en
no war anywhere near Belgrade since World War II. Chances are it's
safer than wherever it is you're coming from.

Appendix: How to find the party place, again..

Check out the extremely detailed and luxurious map that should be
accompanying this text in a file imaginatively called MAP.JPG

Suppose you're in the right the city. The first thing to do now is find=

the bus stop called Zeleni Venac. If you came by train (make sure you
get off at the main railway station), get out of the station and
head left, toward the bus station and beyond. If you came by
bus, well, move away from the railway station. Just look
at the map and it will all make sense. (You could try
your luck with the bus 83, which stops across the
street from the railstation, but it may be
faster to walk to Zeleni Venac first.)

If you came by plane, take a cab to the Pinki hall. In fact, a cab is a=

valid soilution no matter what you came by.

At the Zeleni Venac stop, get on the bus number 15, 84, 704 or 706. Get=

out at the Zemunska Posta stop (83 goes there too) and walk back some
50 meters or so, then turn right (that would have been left, when
viewed from the bus). After crossing the street and walking for
about 300 meters, you'll reach the Pinki hall. Find the
entrance at the right side of the building and you've
        found us.

Appendix to the Appendix: Appendix..

A word or six about the public transportation system: The city official=
s
may deny this, but it is free. The only reason they would deny it is
to rob people who don't know it. When the big, nasty, tattooed,
heavily armed and armored guys from the special shock troops
      called "ticket control" storm a bus/tram/trolley, they're
really looking for foreigners who don't know it's free.
They never bother us natives, and they recognize us
because we know the special secret maneuver that
          non-Belgraders aren't suppose to know.

The maneuver (and we're risking our prestigious status of Belgraders by=

revealing it to you, so you'd better appreciate it) is to pretend you
are a foreign guy who's only come to a demo party and doesn't know
a word of Serbian. That shouldn't be too hard, eh? However, if
you're not sure you can perform it correctly, you can always
get yourself one of those certificates confirming that you
are a foreigner who's only come to a demo party - they
are called "bus tickets" and work extremely well, as
the "ticket control" troopers tend to think only a
real foreigner who's come to a demo party would
actually waste his money on one.

Lately there've been these private busses, you can recognize them by th=
e
more luxurious outlook and big pieces of pizza cardboard stuck to
front or door windows which are supposed to show the price of a
single ride. These are typically owned and driven by
provincial people who know nothing of the secret
maneuver that can get you a free ride in city-
owned vehicles, and will require you to sign
an elaborate contract upon entering, which
will define your payment for their
           services and the conditions
            under which they can take
             your soul to hell where
              it will burn in pain
               forever. If at all
                possible, have
                 nothing to
                  do with
                   them.

So..

What else is there to say than Be There Or Be Smurf!

See you at the right time and in the right place
